Same problem I had with Fedora c2 and a Hp Scanjet 4100c usb.

As suggested in here, I removed the package-managed xsane, compiled and 
installed the drivers manually, then installed the package over the top. 
Then it "just worked". Weird, but maybe worth trying for you too.
