RE: [LUG] Free software and users

Title: RE: [LUG] Free software and users

Some observations:

Re: GNU User Group.  Would you really want to drop the Linux label?  Quite a lot of GNU s/w runs on W-you-know-what (and others).  Quite a lot of Free software that runs on Linux has nothing to do with GNU.

Not all Free software is distributed under GPL.  There are many licence variations, e.g. Perl.
In an interview, LT said that calling Linux GNU/Linux is ridiculous.

Flame fodder - Microsoft can probably afford to buy any technology they want, and could win any technology war eventually (shouts of 'never!').  What they cannot beat is a change in culture.  That might be the only way to prevent a monopoly.

The most technically advanced/reliable product rarely wins.  I believe it is known as the 'Betamax' effect.  Products (software, hardware, cars) are rarely bought on technical merit alone.

Many corporate buyers equate cost with value.  Paying RedHat actually makes them comfortable.  A BT employee once told me, 'we don't use Linux because there is no one to sue if it goes wrong'.  When I pointed out he was using Perl his reply was 'shhhh'.  I also asked him if he knew how many times Microsoft had been successfully sued over a license. BTW, they now use Linux.
