You would never need a filter *if* the modem were the only device on the line. The filter separates out the datastream from the voice traffic. If there is any other device on the same circuit using analogue signals, such as the list given earlier, Sky boxes etc, they will screw up the signals. One point I *did* forget. You need *every* socket in use on the same circuit to be filtered. Same circuit being the same phone number. So if you have two phones, a fax and the modem you need 4 filters. However if you have 4 sockets, but only two in use you only need 2. Also they will have an absolute mare trying to work over a PBX, or in certain blocks of flats if the landlord routes calls through a PBX from each of the flats. Somebody suggested earlier unplugging everything except the modem. Good advice. I would also suggest swapping the filters over (as you will then have a spare). It's not unknown for the filter to be faulty.
