Hi All

Funny this since I have just written re Broadband. But I have a friend who using Win XP and bought a D-Link router/modem etc. but he can't configure it. It won't dial out. Trouble is he is running the windows firewall and some McAfree virus programme. Does he need to stop these running? Any ideas?

Thanks

Rich

Rich,

Win XP is behind the router, and so is the anti-virus. The router needs no computer connected to it to function. If your friend is trying to dial using XP then tell him to stop. All you need is to have the PC network card connected with an Ethernet cable to the router.

If the router won't "dial" out, check that he/she hasn't put 2 line filters in series to the phone socket. (You may laugh but I've seen it happen :-)

Bear in mond that BT broadband needs no password, or phone number, just the user name, and if the settings for the line are correct in the router, then the router will connect by itself. BT Yahoo, does need a password BTW.

A BT ADSL line has the following settings on my router:

Encapsulation = PPP over ATM
Multiplexing Method = LLC Based
Virtual Circuit  :
                VPI = 0
                VCI = 38
Internet connection requires a login
DNS = Get Automatically from ISP

Hope this helps
