When it comes to learning, I wish there was a course at primary school that teaches proper basics. Like putting them on a proper editor at a young age. Getting them familiar with CVS. Filing bug reports. Sending patches. Applying patches.
And while we're at it, let's teach the basic of car mechanics, rudimentary cartography and elements of surgery. I would agree that all students need to know how to use *applications* on a computer and this *should* be done from a young age. Only a few need to know how to use languages, even simple scripting languages. The Otto cycle and the synchromesh gearbox make my car work well. But I don't need to understand them to drive my car anymore than I need to understand how maps are made or the location of my appendix and how to remove it. A dedicated few, perhaps a significant minority, will create operating systems, applications, utilities. *They* will need full and proper teaching. *They* can enter the war over what constitutes a 'proper editor'. They may need to be familiar with CVS. The rest of the world need not be fed a diet of mother's milk and perl (or XHTML).
