I'm also at Plymouth Uni.That sort of ignorant behavour really gets my back up. There is already too much stuff going to land-fill, when someone offers to recycle something they should be respected. This shows that the university has no regard for recycling and environmental issues. I'm also based at the University of Plymouth doing a Ph.D. in satellite research. I've seen much redundant equipment choking rooms that may otherwise be used, I have offered to recycle some of their old PCs and give them to kids with GNU/Linux installed. Guess what, I haven't got one of them.
Saw about 50 14" CRT monitors going into the crusher last year. Asked the bloke in charge if I could take one, he said yes. As I was walking away another guy ran after me and asked me to put it back. Double gutted.
I love that shop, always finding things to recycle. I recently purchased a P100 for £10, installed Suse Linux and gave it to a 13 year old. The boxed Suse 7.1 came from a LUG meeting at Exeter Uni. Whoever donated the Suse 7.1 helped make a young boy happy.
Meanwhile the computer warehouse opposite Uni is selling 14" at about £30 I think. If they buy at £15 that's £750 lost
We could protest. I have strong feelings on this topic and since it's not only the university that would rather crush instead of recycle maybe we should write to our MP.
All this and we're writing scientific papers on environmental impact. If I was rich I'd sue.
Regards Andrew
