[LUG] Laptop Woes

My dear wife gave me Packard Bell 2.3 Athlon Laptop for Christmas!

I was delighted but it's going back to Currys tomorrow.

XP HOME is preloaded but no Cd's to reinstall.
Installed Partition Magic and created suitable partition to install Linux.
After my usual problem got Slackware installed and a dual boot.
In the process I couldn't boot Xp so reinstalled from a cd I had.
Now Xp doesn't recognise the sound card or the modem.
When trying to install drivers for the modem it fails and then offers to connect to the internet and get a suitable driver!!!!
Slackware indicates a sound driver is installed but there's no sound.
Better still 6GB of disc space is occupied by a recovery hidden FAT32 partition but this is broken now.

If I can blag a refund can anyone recommend a laptop for unde £800 with Linux compatible modem & soundcard?

Comment appreciated.
