Not everyone on this list is able to use Linux, Kai. A major purpose of a User Group is to welcome new Users. The monopoly situation of one player is a cold truth and therefore new users are more than likely to come across an internet based user group using the most common means amongst new computer users - IE/OE and Windows. After all, it's hard for experienced Linux users to purchase a new x86 architecture machine without Windoze - choice is limited, 'best deal' prices aren't available, etc. > This post is not relevant to a LUG. Post to a Windows user group. It is relevant because it gives other members the opportunity to explain why Linux isn't affected by most of these problems. > If you want to believe the fear that media **** down your throat, then Don't ever forget that ALL posts are archived for public consumption - the entire internet has access to the archive, not just people you would like to talk to. How members respond to questions from windoze users reflects on the whole Free Software / Open Source movement. > tune into CNN and please don't post/forward that sort of nonsense here. Why not? It gives me a good laugh at Windoze-users expense! Just as long as someone (inevitably) points out to the entire list (and therefore the wider internet) that there are sites out there to check these things out, that most email warnings are hoaxes, that most can be prevented from infecting even Windoze boxes with a little forethought and that Linux is, overall, a better choice because it's less vulnerable to these threats. > Does this mailing has some sort of etiquette? Like no stupid virus > hoaxes, no windows support, no politics, no swearing etc. Windows support - not unless it's things like winmodems preventing users switching to Linux etc. - what you might call crossover issues - including recommending alternatives for what people might see as Windoze only software. Politics? Can't see the relevance to any kind of user group. I'd say that is best left to a personal website etc. But then, who is to decide just when an active discussion becomes political? No swearing I'd say is a good recommendation - as I said, this archive is completely public and things do reflect on the wider community. > If not, how about drawing one up? It has to be voluntary or we'd have to switch to a moderated list - not much use. > > Ok we are a LUG, but I am stuck with Windows for internet use at Paul did say it was an issue with having to use Windows for internet use. I'd say that is an issue for a Linux User Group as it is clearly possible to get Paul online with Linux - it's a matter of crossover software or possibly hardware. - -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.codehelp.co.uk http://www.dclug.org.uk http://www.wewantbroadband.co.uk/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+an+UiAEJSii8s+MRAixOAJ97rVOJpkqaqM9oh/1+OfUiVq8u3wCfdyEb Du/YN7kVed6cipyZuJmYUgM= =CK5z -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
