1) When system opens up it does so with number lock active. How can I

KDE Keyboard Control Module. (You can get to this from the menu, from the KDE
Control Centre, or from kcontrol from the command line and then choose
Peripherals and Keyboard. On the Advanced tab, you can set the behaviour of
numlock in all KDE sessions. Easier than fiddling in the BIOS.

2) Although installation process identified sound card correctly as
ES1868
I get following error messages when trying to run CD Player.
device/dev/dsp can't be opened (no such file in directory) Sound Server
will

That may just be a permissions problem. Open a console / terminal and su to
root.
$ su
password:
# chmod a+x /dev/dsp
# exit
$

When you next login, the sound server should start up properly and you won't
get the message. Then try the CD again.
Also, in the KDE Control Module, try going to Look and Feel and System
Notifications. That may be a quicker way of testing the soundcard. Click on
one of the + in front of the selections (KDE e.g.) and then on the KDE is
starting up + and on Play Sound. In the box below, there's a play button that
you can use to preview the sound and in your case test your sound card
configuration.
