You'll want to mount the HD, go into lilo and change it to boot from
/dev/hda (the mbr) as opposed to a partition and you'll need to modify the
new device names in /etc/fstab so they mount right on bootup

youve finished (eg chroot /mnt/rootfs) before you run lilo to commit the
changes you made to it.
You shouldnt need to touch mtab as that is built as the filesystems are
mounted.
That *should* be it, give it a go.
