Aah - in Linux/UNIX if you dont have tar and a c compiler available youre
stuffed on that score.  Although the're not much use without the base
libraries :)

To be honest from some of what youve been saying I would ask you to
consider RedHat.  The installation (really is) a breeze.  And IMHO its the
best dist for novices.  I used Redhat for thr 1st 2-3 years of linux use
and have only recently stared with SuSE.  Especially if you're not sure
*exactly* what you want on the system.
