thanks for you help. he got a external hard drive but was not being used for backups , for movies to watch on tv downstairs. anyway live n learn. hopefully acer will let him keep his old hard drive and i can have a go at connecting too it too see if anything can be saved.

Quite possibly.  Acer will most probably just replace the drive and return it to the factory defaults, it's very unlikely they'd do any attempt at recovering the data (if the drive is dead then it's usually an expensive job getting it recovered, at least a couple of hundred quid).

Although it's not much use at the moment, for future reference maybe your friend might want to consider backup options, possibly a couple of external hard drives, or even something like Google Drive/Dropbox/Microsoft Skydrive etc (in fact I wouldn't be surprised if Windows 8 had an option to backup to Skydrive).  At least that way if anything happens to the laptop chances are they'd have a backup of the important stuff (yep, I've learnt that the hard way).
