Can you take the drive out and bung it in another machine? Does the drive get detected? (anything in dmesg?)What output do you get from "fdisk -l"? (it may complain about it being a GPT disk).
What output do you get from "parted -l"? (parted supports GPT partition layouts which IIRC Windows 8 and UEFI uses).
How exactly has he nuked the disk? I dropped my laptop on the floor the other week which killed the drive, it wasn't even detected in the BIOS after that. :-(
