Or, if you want to use /etc/crontab add the user name before the command, e.g.
1 23 * * * root /opt/cronjob/startme
1 7 * * * root /opt/cronjob/stopme
At least, that's what /etc/crontab on my Ubuntu suggests; I always use
crontab -e myself.
