OK - sounds like more hassle though. IIRC it did appear in /dev/ under
sda rather than hdc or similar.

Thanks, Robin. Newquay isn't far. Could you drop me a line off-list
with your address etc.? (Might you be around sometime tomorrow?) I'd
like to know whether the drive is cleanable before spending hours on
the phone to "Customer Service" after Easter so that I know whether I
have to insist on sending the machine without hard drive should I only
be offered a repair.
