Actually, I found this: http://mitre.org/work/tech_transfer/mobilemesh/

It does the same sort of thing by the looks of it and it's released 
under the GPL.  There is a package in the Ubuntu repositories and 
presumably Debian too.

Maybe the LUG could look at setting up a mesh network?
