Not sure about on Debian but on Ubuntu 7.04 you can install the 
ntfs-config package which will allow you to mount the drive and then get 
the data off.  Works on the live desktop CD too, just boot up the live 
desktop CD, open a terminal and type the following...

sudo apt-get install ntfs-config

If it can't find it then you'll have to enable the Ubuntu Feisty 
Universe repository.

Anyway, when you have installed it, you will find it under the 
Applications/System Tools menu as NTFS Configuration Tool.
