Back in the dim and distant days when the computer world was moving from DOS to Windows, among the last to make the move were the databases. To start with MS Office didn't include a database (there wasn't one to include). When eventually Access appeared it was not included with the standard edition of Office, you had to ask for the extended edition or buy it separately. Borland had Paradox (IMHO the best) and that took ages to move over to Windows. Databases always seemed to be at the end of the queue. Some didn't even get taken across. In the Linux world the pattern seems to be the same. Star Office didn't have a proper database as far as I remember. Both Koffice and Open Office have database offerings, kexi and base, but as usual they are coming out last. So I think that, again as usual, I will have to wait some years yet to see a 'proper' database. By proper I mean one which is complete in itself, the so called monolithic database. As I have mentioned before, I am aware of mysql and postgresql and others of that ilk. All I am asking for is just one of the same type as Paradox. Is that too much to hope for? I am sure that there is a place for one alongside the current offerings. Meanwhile I am looking at knoda with mysql. I have only just started so I cannot comment yet. And I *will* look at the Open Office offering, but I don't hold out much hope. It is far too early days yet.
