Yes, Found opening am instance first works, but as you say annoying.
Might venture another look at Chromium...
I thought I'd sorted it by adding the line Exec={path to firefox] %u as
per the recommendations at
https://askubuntu.com/questions/41010/link-clicked-not-passed-to-firefox,
but now does not seem to work...
