imo, phones bootloaders shouldn't be unlocked on day one ;) i wouldn't be able to
access my Starling account or GPay. Other apps too. Although if you use Magisk, I
suppose it wouldnt matter. Having said that, if bootloaders were unlockable w/o
needing to get authorisation or fight for access to unlock (my keyone for example
doesn't allow me to flash any ROM, ugh) - that'd be a great milestone.

That is of course exactly what I do - use Magisk and associated modules to sort out compatibility with nosy apps like banking etc.

That being said you're confusing unlocking the bootloader with getting root: very few (any?) apps rebel and refuse to work simply because you've unlocked the bootloader and reinstalled a stock ROM. It's unlocked bootloader + root they don't like.

Some companies (Motorola) make unlocking the bootloader a pain in the arse - you have to enroll an email with them and request an unlock code which is very, very lame. I simply don't buy phones from these companies sticking instead to sane models like Google Nexus/Pixel or Samsung which let you simply unlock/relock your bootloader at will.

To be clear I only use and support/recommend for clients phones that specifically allow trouble free bootloader unlocking and have third party ROM support + root available. I literally won't touch anything else and don't really understand why anyone else would either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
