Usually.
If wife right clicked on desktop and selected (by error) "arrange
desktop items", it give sub menus to set them up in date order , in
alphabetical order or 'custom order [fixed to screen grid position] or
any other  order you want. [horizontal, vertical, whatever]

At least that is an option on openSUSE desktops.
On Ubuntu the few icons I want I leave on their left  hand side menu
