Domestic printer just seems to have died. Wondering if anyone's got recommendations for a colour printer/scanner that doesn't cost a fortune and is used mainly for B&W but occasional colour homework printing. One whose replacement cartridges cost less than the printer would be nice too!

Tom te tom tom te tom.

I got fed up with my printer ink drying up between infrequent printings so decided a laser printer was the answer. I couldn't bring myself to fork out for a colour laser due to infrequency of printing and also, why did I need it. Only for photos and I get those done on Snapfish. So I went for a Brother DCP-L2520DW. Once I got the right drivers I have been very happy with it, except the initial toner cartridge has had to be replaced, but the price for that was reasonable and I don't expect to replace it again for a long while. Doulble sided printer is good too.

I've been using a mono laser Brother HL-2250DN for years now, no problems with it, unfortunately, my scanner is Windows only (HP), so I use it through a Windows Virtual Machine, some care needs to be taken to make sure you get a Linux friendly scanner.

The scanner on the 2250 works fine using simplescan or xsane but they are limited. I haven't found any good scanner software under linux yet.
