[LUG] viruses and protecting against them

Hello all.

Have just had my first experience of a virus on linux since I moved to it a good decade or so ago...
Not fun.
Have eventually after quite a headache re-installed my OS of choice, but now wonder the best ways to;

1) protect this new installation from a similar infection, and
2) how do I check my files on the backup on an external HDD safely before transferring them back onto my system? (is there a way to 'sandbox' them so I don't just move the virus back again?)

Any help and suggestions very welcome.
Thanks

Anthony

Why? So as not to depend on one company for accessing my own data in future.
See:  https://www.documentliberation.org/
MS-Word may say 'damaged file' to discourage this but should open the attachment(s) anyway.
