Re: [LUG] New desktop

Update after your later email (thank you).

  • About Â500-Â700 for PC, running Debian testing.
  • I have a basic laptop with Windows 10 for use on the road but I cannot use it as my main machine.
  • Specs
    • 16GB RAM, maybe 32GB RAM. After your email I had a second look and it would make sense to get more ram.
    • Two hard drives - after your previous comments about SSD drives I would prefer a drive that would gracefully (and slowly fail). Not sure why I would neeed an SSD.
    • Processor: My previous computer was fine running i5, probably get an i7 but doubt I will build a specific machine
    • Lots of USB Ports
    • Two HDMI

Examples I have seen that would work are

Ebuyer seems to have zoostorm

Does anyone know of any stores, comments or suggestions on parts?

If you're dead set on getting a PC replacement rather than another
laptop it might be worth aiming a little higher to be honest - a random
box with 8Gb RAM and a 500Gb HDD is firmly in the "give it away for
free" price range at this point! Ask around or look on Gumtree etc for
Â50 deals maybe, hopefully that would fulfil the "keep it local" part of
your request. You can always pick up ex-corporate boxes like Optiplexes
or ThinkStations for pennies (or out of skips), give them a quick clean
and a new lease of life with a SSD, some more cheap or spare RAM and
even a budget discrete graphics card should you need it.

Rumours of the PC's demise are a _little bit_ premature but the desktop
computer is dying as a platform now - unless you're one of the rare
people that really need a full-on workstation of course.

Cheers
