Re: [LUG] suggestions on best sub Â500 linux laptop

Title: pentiddywoodsheader

I bought my laptop from pcspecialist.co.uk a few years ago and I've had great success with Linux compatibility. I believe they resell various Sager/Clevo chassis and are geared around letting customers specify component selection via their website, and that strongly favours a selection of laptop chassis which are easily configurable and therefore maintainable. My laptop has been a joy to tinker with, indeed repasting the heatsinks last year was a matter of 20 minutes work.

As for Linux, I've tested the following distros on my laptop: Ubuntu, Debian, MX Linux, SuSE Leaf, Solus and Fedora, and aside from nvidia optimus headaches (which you won't have to deal as I presume you aren't interested in discrete GPU options for strong gaming performance) it's been able to cope with anything I throw at it.

I've put together a 14" spec for under Â500 at the following URL:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/ultranoteiv-14/y3yARTuT!m/

There's another option for an alternate chassis with a larger (15") screen and more powerful CPU (i5), however it would mean sacrificing the SSD and I can't recommend that! Here's a comparison of your current CPU and the one configured in the spec above: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i3-7100U-vs-Intel-Celeron-N2930/m176913vsm13386

I hope this helps,

Ed

Would like something with a 14" screen or larger. I currently have an acer aspire E5-411 with 4GB Ram, which works fine but is a little sluggish at times.
I am probably likely to go for a second-hand machine so I don't pay for Windows...(at least not directly!)
Thanks
