Hmm, All and only FreeNAS, well it must be worthwhile then!!!
Michael, funny you should mention an HP Microserverâ.. itâs a Hewlett Packard G7 N54L AMD Turion ÂMicroServer Proliant 4 Bay that Iâm planning to use. And I already have the dual NIC installed. Great minds eh? I was using it to play with VMWare 5.5 but that was a long time ago.
Iâll flatten the whole machine and rebuild just as a NAS.
Iâve never heard of ZFS so it would seem I have a lot of reading and research to do.
FreeBSD rather than Linux? Well Iâve dabbled with that too but thanks for the heads-up, it wonât be a shock to discover that now. Whatever OS I end up with Iâm almost certainly going to need a little help. Itâs been a whileâ.. Retirement has taken the edge off.

Andy is indeed correct, I've used FreeNAS, and it does work, but there
are a lot of quirks if you need/want to do anything outside of the web
interface, although it was last v9 or 10 that I used.
My inclination is to build your own .. all the packages necessary are
trusted stalwarts, and you get to set things up exactly as you please,
and dabble with anything, and you're likely to have a more secure,
flexible system than anything boxed with proprietary drivers/firmware.

Addendum, a while ago I put into use a HP Microserver with 4 disk 'slots' .. it worked well with a USB stick as FreeNAS host, but I probably wouldn't personally use FreeNAS myself again .. I've now got to grips with ZFS-on-linux :)
Things to note: you lose whatever disk FreeNAS is installed on (or used to) so you lose one 'disk' if you're using spinning rust. The HP microserver had an internal USB slot which I used for the OS, which worked well, and was suggested in documentation. I did add a second 'slice' of RAM and a second network NIC to give it 2GB RAM and 2GB networking capacity, and I bonded the two network interfaces together. We were using NFS and Samba4 at the time, and I confess I got proper confused with Windows ACLs, and still don't understand the nuances of Samba 4 yet...
YMMV, but good luck if you choose this route!
