I don't like having FF as the default browser. So in my settings for preferred applications I have put another browser. Fine.

However, working with my laptop today, checking FF for something, I accidentally clicked on the preference to make FF my default browser. Now I can't find how to cancel that. The settings for the preferred applications has not changed, but is now being ignored.

FF is very sneaky, it shows you in bold under preferences if it is not set as the default. But, if you do make it the default, by mistake or otherwise, it does not show any way to cancel it.

Can anyone tell me how to undo that error? I am happy to use about:config if needed. If all else fails, I will remove FF altogether. I rarely use it anyway,

thanks

The browser is set by your system not by the the browser. It is a system wide setting eg display xxx.html code, show a webpage the url points to inan email etc. Firefox can tell your system to make it the default browser but it cannot change the default.

In KDE plasma desktop goto System Settings -> Personalisation_>Applications-> Default Applications->Open http and https urls and set "In the following browser". Put the launch location of your new default browser in the box. ie. in my system /usr/bin/firefox %u.

I believe Gnome and some other desktops have a similar method in their System Settings.

Thanks. I have opened up another of my browsers, Pale Moon and set it up as the default. That works. However, in my settings I have set the preferred browser as Vivaldi. This is not working. I will sort it out.
