There are one or two companies, such as Dell, which provide computers with Linux already installed. I know that. But I think that it is just a sideline for them and not taken really seriously. And they are expensive. And I wonder how much time and effort they put in to making sure they will work well with Linux.
Another option is to use a company such as pcspecialist, zoostorm or novatech. They will send you a computer with no OS installed. This means that you do not have the problem of paying the Windows licence fee or of trying to get a refund. But what do you really get? A computer that was built for Windows, tested on Windows, but just with no OS installed. In my experience there is no effort to check that it will work with Linux. You are on your own. If it has an nvidia graphics card, for example, you may well have problems getting it to work.
So I was very pleased, and surprised this week to come across a company which was set up to provide computers with Linux both installed and tested, although this really means Ubuntu. The company is called entroware [1] and they are a UK company, somewhere in the Liverpool area. Anyway I have been looking at their site and reading some reviews. It seems that they have nothing to do with Windows, and they set up and test their machines with Ubuntu installed. Or you can have one without any OS if you want.
So, I think that this should be supported and encouraged. Anyway, it may be new to some of you, and I hope you find it interesting,
