How is the email sent? Have you asked the admins for the servers involved what happened? Email is fundamentally simple, but you'll waste a lot of time if you don't simply follow the email on its way. If it goes from your PC to your email server, login to email server or ask the admin to login, and check logs see where it went. If it then went to BT's server and was accepted, then ask them what happened. Well configured mail servers rarely lose email, so it may well be queued up waiting for some server to stop rejecting it. As others note BT hasn't been great. They've outsourced it to various providers and their management of those 3rd parties use to be terrible.
