What output do you get from commands such as

lspci, dmesg etc

and perhaps inxi -n which should list network related information. (well
it does in Linuxmint)

Do you get output from

ifconfig, does it show anything for eth0

have you tried rebooting

Perhaps post output to pastebin then post links here.

Thanks for the reply. This is the pastebin link:

Thanks for the help.

So, it's an N40L right? You should have one of these:

Embedded NC107i PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Server Adapter

As far as I can tell that's based on the Broadcom BCM5723, which should
cause the tg3 driver to be loaded by Ubuntu - or any other Linux -
automatically (I think).

Now it may just be me, but scanning through the dmesg from pastebin I
don't see any mention of a network interface other than the realtek wifi
usb device you've plugged in. As in, Linux doesn't seem to be detecting
it *at all*.

I'd flash the BIOS to the latest if you haven't already done so, check
the BIOS settings to make sure the onboard network is actually enabled
(it can be intentionally disabled) and try again. Over the years I've
used tens and tens of these HP Microservers - including the exact model
you've got - and I've never had to manually load a ethernet driver.

TLDR: either it's disabled in BIOS or there's something broken.

Cheers
Thanks for the input on this one. The very last remark was the key. For some unknown reason the LAN port was disabled in the BIOS. Why would you do this?
