Re: [LUG] Calendar, address book server and sync to Ubuntu and Android

Just to provide some info on my setup:

I use a Raspberry Pi 2 to host OwnCloud (based on Arch Linux for ARM) - that is
mainly used as a calendar, but with a few notes / files - it's all running off the
8GB SD card (only 3GB used...)

This will soon be also hosting my torrent server as I have a 128GB USB stick in the
post... Amazon ID: B00YFI1EBC

I use Outlook CalDav Synchronizer
(https://sourceforge.net/projects/outlookcaldavsynchronizer/) to keep my work's
Outlook calendar in sync, then CalDAV Sync Adapter for Android... and (I can't
remember) to sync my wife's KDE Mint calendar.

Then, I have a stripped down PC running Open Media Vault as a NAS for bulk storage.

All of this is at home and externally accessible over t'interweb with a free no-ip
account.

All of this is free / open software, using low cost / free (i.e. old / spares)
hardware.

My only monthly costs are the electricity bill, but as the NAS auto-powers off/on
when needed and the RasPi uses very little power, then I think that's cheaper than
hosted storage.

I'm looking to power the Pi from the NAS and use batteries for when the NAS is off,
using my MoPi (https://pi.gate.ac.uk/pages/mopi.html)

The only issue that I have, is that I currently have no regular off-site backups (I
do have static, offline backups to an external USB drive, but its only updated when
I remember to do so...)

Another cloud hosting option, from OVH:

https://hubic.com/en/

(25GB free, 100GB for â10 incl. VAT/year or 10TB for â50 incl. VAT/year.)

They have a data centre in Gravelines, France just the other side of the channel and
from my brief tests at least the VPS servers seems low latency. (This also applies
to my last email for dedicated servers.)

For services like DropBox, Google Drive, etc you'll want to use end-to-end
encryption to keep your data private (per-file PGP encryption, encrypted LUKS volume
in a file, etc). It doesn't really matter about the provider then (and you can't
ever be sure about access and security unless you have control over the hardware and
network and even then your cloud storage is still connected to the Internet).

Here's how ownCloud employs encryption:
