When I was in a similar predicament I ordered some SIM cards from GiffGaff and the like to test out the coverage. Didn't register them or put on any credit (as wanted by the supplier) but my Nexus 5 did show you the signal strength. Unfortunately it was only EE at the time which was acceptable.
