This is the simplest way to encrypt a file in your own machine
LibreOffice and MS Office allow individual file encryption as does any
decent pdf generator.

If after encryption you put it inside a zip file then you can with
'reasonable' safety send such files to strange places, as long as you
have shared the password by a non email system.
Or Have a set of one time keys you have send to the recipient.
e.g. a quote varying with time to a know between you and recipient
formula from an innocuous source such as Master's scholars Analects or
whatever.
