Re: [LUG] Fwd: Lug issues

Good summary. I agree with the list of reasons and what I think most people visit a lug site for. I like the pic/bio section, although I'm not clear how it would work on a technical level, that's a detail to be sorted out later.

I would add two things:

1.That this list is Inclusive, not Exclusive. By that, I mean it's the main meat and potatoes, but other side dishes like the guides, howtos and general geek-related "Stuff" contributed by anyone is fine to be on the site too. If the dclug site is only going to contain the info you give, it'll fall short in the secondary objectives of education, encouragement and community. All members should be encouraged to contribute content if they wish to.

2. I would also suggest adding a wordpress "Announcer" plugin that emails the list (with a consistent subject so that those who don't like it can filter it out), with an email for each new page or post (or a daily digest). I have repeatedly been surprised that the website has been updated when I've randomly looked at it and might have gone there sooner if I'd known.

Thoughts are :

What? Why? Who? When? Where? How? Â

What do the audience want to achieve?
Why are they visiting?
Who are they ?
When are the visiting?
Where are they going in the site?
How are they using the information? Â

for me the answers are:

I wanted to meet and join the local lug
I went to the site to find out if the lug existed and if they were active
Developer with interest in all types of software and ideologically believe we are more then the sum of the parts when we work together.
at the beginning of me relation ship with the lug ... rarely use it once i join the list.
I when to meeting and info about the group and to see whos who.
to assess if its right for them.

I think we need to re focus the site to clearly achieve these objectives,

-> Introduce ourselves
-> help people get to the list and make first contact Â
-> help them find venus and events

-> help them to understand how to run their own events i.e. B-a-B
-> have them post a short bio of them selves ( expanding the who are we/intro Â)
-> point them to a curation of articles by linux user / Lug level faqs. including our blog pages ( and move the blog to a sub domain and continue it but keep the focus on articles and the main site on welcoming people and being a hub ) Â

-> mailing list signup and management page ( via and iframe)
-> associated groups. i.e Pi other lugs etc
