Re: [LUG] Extending Wifi

Hi Neil,

Have you looked into Powerline extension? This is where the network data is sent through the mains electricity in your home and you can get kits which support WiFi extension.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/tp-link-av500-500-mbps-powerline-homeplug-wifi-extender-with-2-lan-ports-kit-n71qt

The way this works is firstly a plug will be plugged into the mains socket into your router, take the ethernet cable from the bottom of that plug and plug it into the router, now the other plug will have a wifi password on the label on the back of the plug below the prongs, note this password down as this is what you will connect to, as these plugs set up their own access points, however there is a button on the plug that allows you to clone over the information from your router onto the plug so that it all becomes one using the same SSID, password etc. These plugs also have ethernet ports on the bottom, perfect for use with a smart tv, games console etc.

This will work providing that the room you are extending to is running through the same mains fuse box.

Regards

Dan

I have fibre broadband set up at home. The router and my laptop are
upstairs in a spare bedroom which is now my study. The router has to be
there because that is where the master socket is situated.

My computer is upstairs so I use a wired connection, which is fine. My
wife has a laptop which she uses downstairs, so she uses a wifi
connection. In the most comfortable room, the lounge, the wifi signal
is not very good. I have researched some ways to improve this without
any cabling and, as usual, I am getting a bit bogged down with all the
information around.

Can anyone advise a reasonable way to boost the signal, please. The
house is modern, 12 years old, so we are not talking thick stone or
brick walls here. And there is only one upstairs floor. The router is a
netgear WNR2200.

Any help appreciated,

Neil
