Re: [LUG] Home "cloud" server

Hi all,

Thought I'd take a peek over the parapet and ask for a few opinions.

I'd like to make my world paperless (to an extent).

I'd like to be able to scan incoming mail, attach data to it so I can retrieve it and store it securely at home but be able to access this store while out and about if needed. The paper copies will go into a numbered box and live in the document store at the top of the house.

There seems to be a plethora of services - Evernote combined with a Doxie scanner looks gorgeous, will almost certainly nail the job but will then give my entire life over to strangers in the evernote office to do with as they please. So despite this being the easiest, most compelling "quick fix" I'd like something a bit less "in the cloud" and 100% more "in the house".

I already have a raspberry pi server, running raspbian and plex (serving media files). It has a terabyte of storage and there's enough room to add two more 2.5" drives if I ever need them.

I just wondered if anyone had tried OwnCloud8 or similar, or had advice to give before I start.

I already run ubuntu and have a document scanner that works fine at the client end.

Cheers in advance,

Tel.

Talking to myself here. First sign of madness I'm told.

I installed owncloud8 to give it a shot. Can't seem to change the upload limit over 2 MB, despite editing .htaccess and .user.ini as described in thier manual. None of the web interface that controls file size or quota will show either, despite having an admin account. I've probably missed something.

I see there is a recent thread discussing what distro to choose for a home server, but this thread isn't the same. Is nobody interested in this?
