Re: [LUG] RPi2 Overclocking

Anyone have any thoughts or guidelines on this? I've only been playing
for a couple of hours and have already discovered that arm_freq=1000

about those funny little heatsinks in the box? Common sense tells me
that I should obviously apply them, especially if I'm going to continue
overclocking the RPi2 (which I obviously am). Lots of people on teh
internets don't seem to think it's required though, and there's so much
noise out there about RPi's it's difficult to know who's reliable.

I trust you lot rather more when it comes to things like this so any
suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Heat is not generally the issue in ARM processors. Voltage is more critical.

The Pi (v1) has the CPU under the memory chip. Cooling the memory chip can lead to some other issues.

Just don't bother with heat sinks. The cut-off limit for the ARM is about 85C. Above that it will throttle itself down. You're not going to get to that temperature unless you're running the ARM and GPU flat-out in an enclosed box with not ventilation on a hot day in the Sahara.

Run:

  /opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd measure_temp

to see what its doing.

Personally, I don't bother with overclocking above "medium". That's 900Mhz. (Which is the speed the Pi v2 runs at by default) Issues I've personally seen and read about include SD card corruption, memory corruption and video glitches. To go faster you need to increase the core voltage and then you go outside the spec. (and set the "warranty" bit)
