I am communicating with a kubuntu box and have a kubuntu laptop, Apple MacPro, iPad, Android Tablet and iPhones.

Which Linux distro are you using ?

Mint is already set up to use samba to share files, talking to people
on IRC nfs seems to be the native way to go for this. If you want to
share with windows, then use SMB / Samba

Plenty of tutorials out there for this.
