I would like to start a topic on Multiseat configuration for the group to
discuss.

Please could everybody with any experience give some information on what it
would take to set one of these system up. In particular;

what hardware is required to make this possible
which flavour of unix works best for a Multiseat configuration (educational
software for users)
what are todays realistic optimal hardware requirements for such an
environment
preferred software combinations
configuration options

perhaps up to ten users in a local proximity will need to login to a server
so a scale from five users to ten on the hardware specifications
are preferred.

A bit vague as to what you want, but the easy/bog-standard way would be to put the same PC on every desk, install your favourite Linux (e.g. Debian Wheezy) on it, then have a separate server running NFS and NIS, have all the desk PCs use it to mount /home and robert is your fathers brother as they say.

Basically, forget "thin client" and do it the way we all did it 20+ years ago, once desktop computers had replaced xterms.

You can do this with Raspberry Pi's on each desk too. The new web browser is supposed to be fine and of-course it has huge educational value and support. I am working on a "classroom" Pi solution that has the Pi's mount root off NFS as well as /home however it's on the back-burner due to some other stuff I'm involved with.
