Actually, that's exactly what we're trying to achieve. We're not doing
any loadbalancing. All machines simply use the original router as their
gateway, but the second machine allows us to connect to the network in
case the main connection and/or router is having issues (and also to
perform maintenance without interfering with the rest of the traffic).

At the risk of SPOF, that's what most folk would do with a single load balancing/failover setup - whether it's the draytek (which is unusual amongst domestic routers for having this built-in) or a linux box somewhere routing and managing failover. Now I'm definitely not a network guru, but doing this logic on client appears to be a lot of work.Â

Also - why not take benefit from load balancing and effectively doubling your downstream (in multi-fetch uses like webpages) if it's easy?
