Light will cause more damage.  Admittedly, one use of a scanner on each
won't amount to much harm, but repeated exposure will, as does constant
exposure to sunlight.  It's for this reason many archives don't allow
documents to be scanned or photographed using flash.

If you want to avoid further degradation use acid free storage media.
