Re: [LUG] Backup Errors

Hi Steve,

I just copied the Mail folder manually and it didn't come up with any I/O errors. What I may do is move the folders because at the moment they are nested unnecessarily, as I made folders for each backup on the drive without realising rsync would make its own, so now I have e.g. /WINDOWS_7/WINDOWS7 which is pretty pointless and might result in filename lengths being an issue.

What's the total filename / path length?

Just out of curiosity - can you just manually copy those files from the source disk
to the *root* of the destination drive?

If not, try renaming the source folders to shorter names (do a folder listing to a
text file first, so you know what they should be when you're finished)

I had a situation once where we couldn't copy files because someone had moved a
folder to a deep nest of sub-folders... the data was fine, you just couldn't get at
it... renaming the folders allowed us to drop below the ~200 character limit and
retrieve the data.

Just a thought...

Steve

Subject: [LUG] Backup Errors

Hi All,

I'm running a backup using rsync to a USB external drive with plenty of space on it.
The Mint system backup and Home partitions backed up successfully. However backing
up the Windows Documents folder I get a few of these errors:

rsync: rsync_xal_set:
lsetxattr(""/media/julian/HECATE/WINDOWS_DOCUMENTS/CYNTHIA/Mail/tbird.default/Mail/Local
Folders/Friends.sbd/Offline.sbd/UK.sbd/Local.sbd/Gals.sbd/HelenC.mozmsgs/COL107-W32FB0120E2D74AE1FF780FAC040%40phx.gbl.wdseml"","user.OECustomProperty")
failed: No space left on device (28)
rsync: rsync_xal_set:
lsetxattr(""/media/julian/HECATE/WINDOWS_DOCUMENTS/CYNTHIA/Mail/tbird.default/Mail/Local
Folders/Friends.sbd/Offline.sbd/UK.sbd/Local.sbd/Gals.sbd/Victoria.mozmsgs/62A5C58172A28A47BFBA9762C09CF44505B61D%40wfha-srv01.WFHA.local.wdseml"","user.OECustomProperty")
failed: No space left on device (28)
rsync: rsync_xal_set:
lsetxattr(""/media/julian/HECATE/WINDOWS_DOCUMENTS/CYNTHIA/Mail/tbird.default/Mail/Local
Folders/Friends.sbd/Offline.sbd/UK.sbd/Local.sbd/Guys.sbd/AlunC.mozmsgs/20090625052203.qc026bqh9ck4404s%40www.educationlawspecialists.co.uk.wdseml"","user.OECustomProperty")
failed: No space left on device (28)

They're interspersed between files that backed up successfully, so I don't know what
the 'No space left on device' is all about. It's been suggested previously the
source HD may be dying due to I/O errors I had last time. Could this be related?

The backup ended with this error message:

sent 664181577 bytes received 4949 bytes 2630441.69 bytes/sec total size is
41824008012 speedup is 62.97 rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred
(see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1070) [sender=3.0.9]

Any advice please?

Kind regards,

Julian
