Yep, having something "non-technical" to get people's interests up...

Another thought is to put a few Ras Pi's around a house to monitor it's temperature for a while (say a few weeks)... that will help people balance their central heating... rather than having all the radiators on full with one room getting hotter (faster) than another one... in theory all the rooms would heat up evenly without having hot and cold spots

As my house is heated with independently timed electrical heaters, then the next logical step for me is a Ras Pi controlled central heating system which controls the heaters... I'll take on Nest and collect £3.2B from google ;o)

(Patent Pending...)

Technology already exists to do all this.

For a wet system:

Balance radiators: Roll of black insulating tape and an IR thermometer.

Room temps (a): Install TRVs on all radiators.

Room temps (b): Zone valves and a better controller.

This is all better done with existing kit - for now.
