Re: [LUG] Your ISP - and IPv6

I have been with the same ISP (fast.co.uk) since October 2007. That is quite a long time, it seems to me. They are OK although recently I have been seeing a lot of variations in the download speeds. This may be something at the exchange of course.

I have been seeing and hearing more about IPv6 recently. Now I don't know much about it, but it seems that the older IPv4 numbers are running out. Again, I am not sure if there is any urgency to change yet.

I am beginning to wonder if it is time to change to another ISP. Fast is rather expensive, from what I can see looking around Google. (I do understand that, like most things, you get what you pay for to some extent.)

So, as a combination of the above thoughts I have been looking around to see which ISP's are now ready for IPv6. Not many! I have spoken to the people at Fast and they are obviously not a bit interested at the moment.

So, does anyone on the list have any thoughts, opinions, on this please?
This may be on interest to others too,

I emailled here about this over 2.5 years ago ...

What's happened since then - we'll we've more or less run out of IPv4 addresses. There are still plenty left, but as of just under a year ago, RIPE (who allocate all European IP addresses) are into their final /8 (24 million - 17 million left) and once that's gone, then who knows. See http://www.ripe.net/internet-coordination/ipv4-exhaustion

I've had IPv6 natively in my home/office for nearly 3 years now, and most of my clients have native IPv6 now too. Most of my hosting is using IPv6 now although there are still one or 2 older systems - I'm slowly working my way through them, upgrading older kit as needed.

From the point of picking a domestic ISP, I've long since given up on the
cheapies. You get what you pay for and I'm fed-up with people bleating on about their ISP being rubbish. Tell it to someone else.

There are at least 3 UK ISPs offering IPv6 to home users that I know about. Entanet (and their dozens of resellers), AAISP and Goscombe. (There are a many others but they mainly specialise in leased lines rather than consumer grade contended broadband solutions)

Virgin are trialling it. Plusnet have trialled it, stopped the trial and are now trialling carrier-grade NAT. (google it) BT are rumoured to be trialling it too.

Bye the way - there's a seriously cool game at: http://www.loopsofzen.co.uk/

Try it now! (But if you can't get to it, it's because your ISP has blocked it from you - imagine paying an internet provider who blocks part of the internet from you!)

IPv6 has been a reality for over 10 years now. Time to move with the times. Vote with your feet and wallet and the others will get the hint.
