They don't mean anything. They just turn up and do a job. It pays. They have the status in the community that comes with having a job. They have peer approval for conforming to the values of just another hierarchical organization, which values the same things as every other employer: consistency, conformity, predictability, input, certain kinds of ambition but not others, presenteeism, obedience, certain kinds of inventiveness and creativity but not others, etc etc. The big picture is not the concern of the individual in the workplace. That's the way we all like it. Otherwise, which of us could turn up to work tomorrow?
