All they need to boot the first time is power (laptop), a LAN connection and DHCP server (to your laptop e.g.) You can then ssh into it and finish the setup "headless", if needed. (sudo raspi-config)

My only HDMI device is my telly. There is no spare wifi adapter or easy LAN there. My only desire to have a Pi was to just see how MuseScore performed on it - I was buggered if I was going to go through all the above when the SD card might have arrived the following day.
