Re: [LUG] Avatars and advertising

Definition of a .org domain (and can be reasonably assumed to include .org.uk);  "The org domain was one of the original top-level domains, with com, edu, gov, mil and net, established in January 1985. It was originally intended for non-profit organizations or organizations of a non-commercial character"

Certainly I don't like commercial advertising on a place like this, even though I know several LUG members have businesses that are related to LUG activities. I think it wrong the site was apparently used for this without the agreement of the group.

The only time I would be - well, if not happy, then in a state of mere grumbling acceptance - would be if it was advertising or services to directly benefit the group *as a whole* - ie, appropriate low-impact adwords or small banner adds to add to the LUG's treasury only, or in a small banner along the lines of "Website kindly hosted by Nappy Sack and Badger Enterprises" if the host wanted something back. In either case, it should be decided by the group as a whole, or at least those who can be bothered to vote - not just done for personal benefit.

This is a USER GROUP. By the users, for the users. It's not a market opportunity.

There is a specific place on the DCGLUG website for members to advertise their services. Outside of that, I do not think it is appropriate.

It would be considered somewhat rude if you went to a communal place where there was a given table in which you were encouraged to put your business materials and instead (or as well) you went around putting your leaflets on peoples' laps.

Please be aware that, should the management of DCGLUG website deem your avatar inappropriate for whatever reason it can, and will, be deleted.

I am also advised that the LUG is not to be used for personal gain.

This raises some questions in my mind about the services section of the site. If we are allowed to advertise on the site what format should it take and should there be some level of moderation?

Thoughts?

Neil (who recently had a qr code avatar removed)
