Not exactly what you're looking for, but two slightly retro approaches  
that might deliver the required end:
Are you & others involved comfortable with command-line/terminal  
action? If so, you can "go up a level" and share a virtual terminal  
using tmux or screen, and run either of the world's most powerful  
editors, vim (yech) or emacs (yay). Very bandwidth-efficient and robust.
Or in the GUI space, you can achieve something similar -- sharing a  
desktop rather than a terminal -- using eg X11vnc.
