Not exactly what you're looking for, but two slightly retro approachesthat might deliver the required end:

Are you & others involved comfortable with command-line/terminalaction? If so, you can "go up a level" and share a virtual terminalusing tmux or screen, and run either of the world's most powerfuleditors, vim (yech) or emacs (yay). Very bandwidth-efficient and robust.

Or in the GUI space, you can achieve something similar -- sharing adesktop rather than a terminal -- using eg X11vnc.
