Even a cursory glance at the product page on Amazon shows that it isn't
a "simple lead", it obviously has in-line silicon to do the conversion
work (otherwise, duh, it wouldn't work would it?)...

As someone else pointed out, the very first three of the reviews include
instructions to get it working with a Raspberry Pi. So it obviously does
work.

You are right that normally, digital to analogue conversion either way
has typically needed a converter box and they are frequently expensive.
But it sounds like if possible, you want to revisit your similar problem
and this time don't buy a simple lead like it, just actually buy one of
these instead.
