The wife just forwarded to me an email sent to pretty much all students at Plymouth University. I thought it might be of interest to some on the list. The main part of the message is below: There is an excellent NASA backed 'hackathon' coming up on Sat 20th - Sunday 21st April, hosted at the MetOffice in Exeter. It's a two day + one night effort, often fuelled by Coffee / Red Bull and Food (you have to be prepared to rough-it a bit). The project themes are here - http://spaceappschallenge.org/challenges/ Registration and details of the challenges are on the NASA site at http://spaceappschallenge.org and other info on http://open.nasa.gov There's Exeter specific info here http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/conference/space-apps-2013/exeter The ultimate team would probably be multi-disciplinary (scientists, electronic engineers, software engineers, mechanical engineers, mathematicians/statisticians etc.). Software is a key element (most projects typically need some web development), but the competition is not limited to software only. Last year there were some fairly creative efforts using Arduino boards as well and the themes were varied. Web and/or app developers are key to this. If you have an idea that includes electronics in the mix, then the typical level of hardware would be a Mindstorms Robot, Raspberry Pi, Arduino or Beagle Board - there are also Maplin kits etc.. something you can get working quickly basically. I suspect there is no time for etching PCB's, but Vero-board might be ok. For mechanical, again, rapid prototyping would be a requirement. It could even be technical Lego or Meccano! Scientific expertise would really strengthen a team. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
